Mam Xoi Hill guide Ly A Do said locals usually prepare for sowing from April to mid-May, but there is still no water on the fields.

At this time of year, Do said, the fields would typically be crowded with visitors.

Due to the drought this year, he has refused many guests.

Giang A Sau, chairman of the La Pan Tan commune People's Committee, explained that people dug ditches in years when there was plenty of water to plough the fields. This year, however, they are only able to harrow four to five fields due to the lack of rain.

In 2019, Mu Cang Chai's fields were listed as a special national relic. Aside from the watering season, Mam Xoi Hill is also a great place to see the ripened rice season in the north from September to October.

The drought has affected many places in the northern mountains, including the Ban Gioc waterfall in Cao Bang Province, which is also experiencing water shortages.
