Tucked away in the heart of Vietnam, Ba Be Lake offers an off-the-beaten-path biking experience that is second to none. Far from the bustling tourist crowds, the trails around this tranquil lake offer mountain bikers a chance to connect with nature and explore the authentic local culture.

Ideal Season

The Dry Season (November to February)

Riding during the dry season ensures that you avoid the muddy and slippery conditions that come with the rains. Trails are more navigable, allowing for a smoother and safer biking experience.

Wet Season Woes

Unless you're an extreme sportsperson with a love for mudding, it's best to avoid the wet season. The trails can become extremely slippery, making it a risky venture.

Mountain Biking Trails

  • Trail to Pac Ngoi Village: Mostly Easy, with a few challenging segments. Paved roads, dirt tracks, and a few rocky paths.

Start at the Ba Be National Park Visitor Center and make your way toward the beautiful Pac Ngoi Village. Pass through emerald rice terraces that look like stairways to heaven. Experience authentic village life as you ride by, perhaps even witnessing traditional farming methods. The trail is enveloped by thick forests, making the ride pleasantly cool and offering occasional wildlife sightings.

  • Tip: There's a lovely café just before entering Pac Ngoi Village where you can enjoy some local snacks. Also, don't miss out on the photo ops at the terraces!

  • Trail to Dau Dang Waterfall: Challenging. Jungle paths, steep climbs, and descents.

This trail is not for the faint-hearted. It kicks off from the main park area and plunges right into the dense jungles of the Ba Be National Park. Along the way, you'll encounter some steep climbs and sharp descents, so be prepared for a workout. The climax is the stunning Dau Dang Waterfall. The area around the waterfall is a great spot to rest, perhaps even take a dip to cool off.

Tip: The trail can get tricky, especially during descents. Engage low gears and keep your speed in check. Make sure your brakes are in excellent condition before embarking on this route.

  • Hydration and Nutrition: Your journey may take hours, and there are limited shops or restaurants along the trails. Pack enough water and high-energy snacks like granola bars or bananas to keep you going.

  • Safety First: Before heading out, inform someone about your expected route and return time. If possible, carry a basic first-aid kit and a fully charged mobile phone for emergencies.
