Vietnam boasts a rich tradition of stringed musical instruments that captivate audiences with their unique characteristics.

Dan Bau, known for its rustic and tunable sound, is a unique and captivating instrument that can deeply touch the hearts of the audience with just a single string, expressing a wide range of tones and emotions, making each song and melody enchanting.

Dan Nguyet, widely utilized in folk and royal music, produces clear, vibrant sounds that adapt to various performances, from lively celebrations to contemplative moments. It finds its place in solemn ceremonies, charismatic singing, emotional funerals, and elegant operas, both as an accompaniment and in solo performances.

Dan Day, historically an accompanying instrument for traditional arts, features a long-necked bass design with high frets. Its unique technique, Ngon Chun, enables the player to lower the melody, creating warm, mellow, yet short sounds that enhance the voices of singers it accompanies. Nowadays, Dan Day is also used to accompany poetry, attracting the attention of many tourists.

Dan Nhi, despite its simple appearance, holds great significance in traditional Vietnamese arts, complementing folk songs in the North and Cai Luong in the South. With two metal strings and a wooden or bamboo bow fitted with horsehair, Dan Nhi's body is crafted from hardwood and covered with snake or python skin. It lacks frets and features two tuning pegs. Skilled players utilize various techniques, including vibrato, staccato, legato, and string manipulation, to produce glissandos, rapid runs, trills, and more.

Dan Tranh, a Vietnamese plucked zither, originated in the 11th century with 14 strings, later evolving to a standard 17-string version. Larger zithers with 22, 24, and 25 strings were also developed. The curved instrument features a soundbox with a curved top plate, flat bottom plate, and six side-pieces. Movable bridges and steel strings tuned to the pentatonic scale adorn it. Performers utilize metal, plastic, or tortoise-shell picks for plucking.
